He is a pioneer in hip and knee surgery and has performed thousands of hip and knee replacements as well as shoulder and elbow replacements and revision of failed hip and knee joint replacements.
His current interests include all forms of minimally invasive surgery for the hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, foot, ankle and spine for both young and older patients. He does all types of joint replacement surgeries including the use of robots and computer navigation as well as revision of failed joint replacements which has loosened, worn out, damaged or infected. Over the 20+ years he worked in Tan Tock Seng Hospital, he gained extensive experience in treating patients with Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, SLE, Ankylosing Spondylitis and Avascular Necrosis in the department of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology.
Achievements
He received his advanced training in hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, foot and ankle and tumour surgery for two years in the prestigious Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA, where he was the first Asian to be appointed an Adult Reconstruction Fellow. At the Mayo Clinic, Dr Lai used the anterolateral approach for hip replacement under the supervision of world renowned surgeons such as Prof Bernard F. Morrey. As a result of this rigourous training, Dr Lai has a zero rate of hip dislocation compared to the posterior approach for hip replacement surgery commonly used in Singapore.
Dr Lai was formerly Director of Adult Reconstruction Service, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, performing joint replacement and reconstruction surgeries for arthritis, sports injuries and fractures of the hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, foot and ankle for more than 20 years.
He was President, Singapore Orthopaedic Association in 2007 and founded the ASEAN Arthroplasty Association (AAA) to teach doctors in Orthopaedics in ASEAN countries. He was an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons FRCS examination (UK), the NUS Master of Medicine examination and the NUS MBBS Final Professional Examinations in Orthopaedics Surgery.
He has published in Current Orthopedics and Clinical Research, Journal of Trauma and The Knee. He has presented and lectured at the American Academy of Orthopedic Association (AAOS), Mayo Clinic Hip and Knee Arthroplasty Courses, Mayo Clinic Alumni Meetings, International Society for Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), Asia-Pacific Arhtroplasty Society (APAS), Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Society (APOS) and conferences in China, India, Korea, Japan, Taiwan and ASEAN nations.
